When: The Keynote Y2K Internet Performance Hotline is currently
operating and is providing information regarding Keynote's Y2K
measurement methodology. The Hotline will be updated hourly on
Dec. 31 and Jan. 1 to report on Internet performance and
availability as the Millennium begins in the Pacific and sweeps
across the time zones of the world. Y2K Internet Performance
results will also be posted on Keynote's web site at
www.keynote.com.
How: The infrastructure of the Internet is one of the world's largest
distributed computing systems. It comprises millions of routers,
switches, DNS servers and other specialized computers that manage
and carry Internet traffic between World Wide Web sites and user
PCs. A Y2K problem in any of these components could produce a
cascading effect on Internet performance and availability.
Keynote will measure a major web site in each of the 24 global
time zones from Keynote's global network of measurement computers in
over 90 locations around the world. This will provide an immediate
perspective on the effect of Y2K based on over 200,000 measurements
each day during the global Millennium change. Benchmark measurements
of the selected web sites have already begun.
The selected web sites that Keynote is measuring for the Keynote
Y2K Internet Performance Hotline and report are physically located in
all the major time zones across the world, from Tonga in the Pacific
on the western side of the international date line to Hawaii on the
eastern side.
As the Millennium arrives in each time zone, the web sites and
Internet infrastructure in that time zone may experience Y2K failures
that could lead to performance and availability failures. Keynote's
measurement computers will indicate infrastructure malfunctions if web
sites in an area become inaccessible.
The measured web sites include the following:
