What: Hundreds of astronauts will gather at NASA's 40th
Anniversary Celebration in Washington, DC, planned
by the American Institute of Aeronautics and
Astronautics (AIAA), highlighting the milestones of
the United States space programs. During the program
PETER NERO AND THE PHILLY POPS will perform the
music that will awaken Senator John Glenn during his
mission in space. Peter Nero's "Voyage into Space,"
will incorporate multi-media special effects and
NASA Astronaut George D. "Pinky" Nelson will
narrate.
Background: GRAMMY Award winning pianist Peter Nero was inspired
to write "Voyage into Space" after a telephone
conversation with his friend, Senator John Glenn,
when he heard firsthand about his friend's desire to
return to space. This was in the spring of 1997 --
before the Senator's flight was confirmed! At this
time, Peter Nero was preparing for a concert titled
"Fly Me to the Moon: A Space Odyssey" that was
performed in Oct., 1997 at the Academy of Music
in Philadelphia. This 17 minute composition was
written for symphony orchestra and
astronaut/narrator, arranged and conducted by Nero.
Peter Nero and The Philly Pops celebrate their 20th
Anniversary this season. For the past 37 years,
GRAMMY Award winning pianist Peter Nero has built an
impressive career as a Pops conductor, arranger and
composer. In his seventh season as Pops Director of
the Florida Philharmonic Orchestra, Nero has
received two GRAMMY Awards with ten nominations and
recorded 63 albums including the million-selling
"Summer of '42
