What: John Bryan will address the members and guests of the Economic
Club of Chicago, sharing his thoughts and experiences on his
twenty-five years as Sara Lee's CEO.
Who: John Bryan is Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer
of Sara Lee Corporation. Mr. Bryan became president and a
director of the company in 1974, and was named chief executive
officer a year later. He was elected chairman of the board in
1976. Mr. Bryan is the architect of Sara Lee's extensive global
portfolio of leading consumer brands. Under his leadership, the
company's revenues have grown from $2.4 billion in 1975 to more
than $20 billion in 1999. Mr. Bryan is a member of the board of
directors of BP Amoco Corporation p.l.c., BANK ONE CORPORATION,
General Motors Corporation and Goldman Sachs Group Inc. He led a
$100 million fund-raising campaign to renovate Chicago's
Orchestra Hall and Lyric Opera House, and was recently appointed
by Mayor Richard M. Daley as the chairman of a private
development project to build a $250 million millennium park on
Chicago's lakefront. Mr. Bryan has long promoted the advancement
of women in business and also actively supports social issues.
