The role of standardization in establishing new technologies and ultimately building healthy, competitive markets for electronic systems is the focus of tomorrow's keynote address at the JEDEX Conference in Santa Clara, Calif. Jan du Preez, president of Infineon Technologies North America Corp., will lay out the case for wider support of voluntary standardization practices across the electronics industry in a 30-minute talk, starting at 9:00 a.m. on March 26 in the Santa Clara Convention Center.

The keynote kicks off the second day of the JEDEX Conference, the first public conference of the JEDEC Solid State Technology Association, the semiconductor engineering standardization body of the Electronics Industry Alliance (EIA). Sessions following the keynote include a look at the inner workings of nearly 50 JEDEC committees and a panel discussion on patent policy and intellectual property.

As the senior executive of the North American operations of Infineon Technologies (NYSE:IFX)(FSE:IFX), du Preez is responsible for business operations, strategy and key account relationships in one of Infineon's largest markets worldwide. His keynote talk will outline Infineon's experiences working in JEDEC and review the role of standardization in creating many of today's largest industrial markets.

According to du Preez, broadband optical communications is one area where the standards process is still just developing, with movement toward informal agreements on multi-source products. The next step is to incorporate the new technologies into standards definition processes that create a common playing field for producers and predictable business environment for purchasers.
