Golfing Legend Chi Chi Rodriguez Honored With Third Annual Paul
Runyan Recognition Award
WHAT: At the age of 93, world-renowned golf pro Paul
Runyan passed away last year, but his legacy of hope and
healing remain. Runyan's legend both on and off the green
continues to provide charitable support for children with
osteosarcoma -- bone cancer -- as Orthopaedic Hospital
hosts its 14th Annual Paul Runyan Memorial Golf Classic.
On Monday, June 23rd, over 100 local golfers will tee off
to raise funds for charity care programs at Orthopaedic
Hospital as they "play for the children." Following a
cocktail reception, silent auction and dinner, the special
awards ceremony will feature a video acceptance from
worldwide golfing champion Chi Chi Rodriguez, this year's
recipient of the Third Annual Orthopaedic Hospital Paul
Runyan Recognition Award. Given in memory of Runyan and
his late wife, Berniece Harbers-Runyan, the award was
bestowed upon previous recipients Arnold Palmer and Jack
Nicklaus.
All proceeds from the Paul Runyan Memorial Golf Classic
will directly benefit the Orthopaedic Hospital Pediatric
Musculoskeletal Tumor Program, which is dedicated to
helping children who suffer from osteosarcoma, one of the
most virulent forms of cancer. Proceeds will help children
like 15-year-old Michele Avila, who are afflicted with
bone tumors, to lead healthier lives. For more than 90
years, Orthopaedic Hospital has been helping children with
crippling conditions receive the finest care in the world
and lead healthy, active lives, regardless of their
families' ability to pay.
