WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN: Leading experts on Asia will gather at the Hoover Institution starting at noon on Oct. 29 for a symposium on Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Mainland China in a Changing Political and Economic Context. WHY: Events in Asia have rattled world financial markets and prompted fears of a coming global recession. Hoover Institution associate director Thomas Henriksen organized the conference, which is being cosponsored by the Institute for National Policy Research (INPR INPR Institute for National Policy Research (Taipei, Taiwan) INPR Inventory Project Report INPR International Network on Personal Relationships ) in Taipei, so experts could better explore the political and economic situation in the region. The schedule includes a keynote address by Hung-mao Tien, the president of the Institute for National Policy Research on "The Prospect of Taipei-Beijing-Washington Relations after Clinton's visit." One session of the symposium will focus on the dynamics of the relationship between Taipei, Hong Kong, and Beijing. The speakers will be Yun-han Chu, director of programs at INPR, and Byron Weng of the Chinese University of Hong Kong The motto of the university is "博文約禮" in Chinese, meaning "to broaden one's intellectual horizon and keep within the bounds of propriety". .
