TAMPA, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 14, 2000 How will Florida assimilate its next 15 million residents overt the next 25 years while safeguarding its fragile environment and protecting its air quality and natural beauty? What will the quality of life be like for new citizens? How will the state finance continued growth while providing a sound education to new students? These are among the questions that will be considered Sept. 18-20 when 200 invited participants come together in Tampa for the Future of Florida American Assembly. Bob Martinez, Tampa Electric Company President John Ramil and Curtis Johnson, a noted author and journalist on planning and growth issues, will be among the speakers addressing participants from around the state from various constituencies. Invitees are a diverse group with competing interests-40 percent are from the business sector; 40 percent from the civic and non profit sector and 20 percent from the public sector. They will meet in large and small groups for three days at the Tampa Marriott Waterside Hotel and the Tampa Convention Center The Tampa Convention Center is a mid-sized convention center located in Downtown Tampa, Florida. Its location is ideal because it has both waterfront views, and views of the skyline. . The public is invited to observe the process as environmentalists sit side by side with developers, planners and lawmakers to consider how Florida must act to successfully accommodate growth. Elected officials, water managers, business leaders, officials from the League of Women Voters League of Women Voters, voluntary public service organization of U.S. citizens. Organized in 1920 in Chicago as an outgrowth of the National American Woman Suffrage Association, it had as its original nucleus the leaders of the latter organization. and other civic activists will bring their viewpoints as well. By allowing each member to express their ideas and suggestions using a fair and open process of consensus building, the group's efforts will culminate in a Policy Statement designed to guide lawmakers, policymakers, planners, and other stakeholders as Florida continues to grow. The intention is for this to become a viable vision/action plan that will be considered by the Governor's Growth Management Study Commission and others who influence growth in the state.
