WHAT: State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell,
L.A. City Councilman Eric Garcetti, LAUSD Board President
Jose Huizar, L.A. Commission on Children, Youth and their
Families President Alan Arkatov, L.A. Deputy Mayor of Workforce
Development Joy Chen and Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce
First Vice Chairman Chris Martin will provide locations and
other details about the free financial aid workshops that will
be held throughout Los Angeles on L.A. Free Cash for College
Day, January 24, 2004. The workshops will help students and
parents complete the often complicated application forms
necessary to access Cal Grants and other college financial aid.
Ten L.A. students will also receive $1,000 college scholarships.
WHEN: January 23, 2004 -- 10 a.m.
WHERE: Los Angeles City College, 855 N. Vermont Avenue, Los Angeles
(Event will be held in the campus' quad area; media should park
on Heliotrope Drive, which borders the west side of campus)

BACKGROUND: The average college graduate will make $1 million more
over his or her lifetime than someone with just a high
school diploma. College financial aid is available to all
students, regardless of income or immigration status. The
financial aid workshops held on L.A. Free Cash for College
Day are part of the award-winning L.A. Free Cash for
College Project, a program designed to expand access to
education for Los Angeles families.
