Green Cross/Global Green Plan to Fight Energy Poverty for 2 Billion
Without Electricity, Reduce Urban Peak Demand to Stem Blackouts, and
Combat Climate Change; Plans Discussed at Parallel People's Energy
Dialogues in Barcelona
WHAT: Global Green USA, the U.S. affiliate of Green Cross
International -- Mikhail Gorbachev's global
environmental movement -- will urge leaders attending
the Bonn Conference on Renewable Energy to commit to a
"glasnost for energy." The appeal, which includes a
specific proposal for "The Solar Venture - a $50 billion
Global Solar Fund," has been presented to the
intergovernmental Renewables 2004 meeting. Global Green
will be in Bonn lobbying governments to adopt the Global
Solar Fund (a plan to drive down the cost of solar over
10 years for the developing world and urban centers).
The plan will also be unveiled at the parallel "people's
energy meeting" or Energy Dialogues on June 2-3, 2004.
Global Green/Green Cross International will present the
session as part of the 6-month Forum Barcelona 2004.
Experts are available for comment.
WHO: Experts from industry, government, academia, IGOs and
NGOs, and members of the public. Featured speakers
include Mikhail Gorbachev.
WHEN: Energy Dialogues: Wed., June 2, to Thurs., June 3
Speech by Mikhail Gorbachev: June 2, 9:30-10:30 AM
Press Conference: June 2, time TBA
NOTE: Bonn Renewables 2004 will take place June 1 to 4
WHERE: Energy Dialogues:
Barcelona International Convention Center (CCIB)
Pl. Llevant (On the corner of Avda. Diagonal and Rambla
Prim)
08019 Barcelona
WHY: To call upon leaders in Bonn to adopt a renewable energy
plan that addresses energy poverty (i.e., 2 billion
people without access to electricity is an obstacle to
rising out of poverty), urban peak demand (i.e.,
blackouts in Italy, New York, etc. over the past year),
and the need for energy "glasnost" (i.e., increase
energy independence through making the grid smarter,
more flexible); and to intensify public, media, and
leadership attention on the nexus of security and
environment.
