--(BUSINESS WIRE)

Gigante

WHO: Often at political odds, Republican Leader Curt Pringle and
Democratic Latino Activist Nativo Lopez are united in their
support for Gigante. They will ask the Anaheim City Council
to overturn a recent Planning Commission recommendation to
bar Gigante, USA from doing business in Anaheim, Calif.
Pringle & Lopez will be joined by many other leaders
representing a broad cross-section of the community.

WHAT: Gigante is one of the largest grocery chains in Mexico. In
June, the planning commission denied the store's liquor
license although a liquor license for the Smart & Final next
to the Gigante site was recently approved. Staff
correspondence indicates they thought Gigante "too Hispanic"
for the area, which is 60 percent Latino.

WHEN: 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 16, 2002

WHERE: Anaheim Plaza, 650 North Euclid, Anaheim (located at the
Euclid offramp from the 5 freeway.) The news conference will
be at the North end of the shopping center in front of the
         proposed Gigante store.

WHY: The Anaheim City council is slated to vote on the Planning
Commission decision on Tuesday, Aug. 20. The community
leaders want to demonstrate to the council that there is a
broad base of support for the supermarket.

VISUALS: Numerous political leaders are available for comment. A
display of Latino specialty items from Gigante will be
          available for view and sampling.
