WHAT: The 2nd annual Fluidmaster "Flush Off" kicks off
October National Toilet Repair Month. October has
been selected as National Toilet Repair Month because
this is the time of year that most consumers tackle
home repair projects in preparation of holiday events
and the arrival of house guests. National Toilet
Repair Month is a way to motivate consumers to attend
to the needs of their water closet before major
problems occur. This means conducting a simple
toilet tune-up by replacing tired, old-fashioned
components with well-engineered valves, flappers,
levers and connectors. No more handle jiggling,
wasted water, late-night noises, leaks or worries.

Toilet repair is the No. 1 "fix-it" plumbing task tackled by
consumers each year.
FACT: -- One leaky toilet can waste 78,000 gallons of water
a year -- that's enough to fill a backyard swimming
pool.
-- A faulty or worn flapper causes the majority of
toilet leaks, symptomized by the need to jiggle the
tank handle.
-- Sir Thomas Crapper is credited for patenting the
first flush toilet in London in the late 1800s.
-- Americans flush 4.8 billion gallons of water away
every day.
-- Approx. 1 in 4 of this country's 150 million
toilets leak water.
-- In 1988, Massachusetts became the first state to
legally require "low-flow" (1.6gpf) toilets in all
new or remodeled bathrooms. This became a federal
mandate in 1994, applying to all 50 states.

DID YOU
KNOW THAT: -- Sir Thomas Crapper served as the Royal Sanitary
Engineer for members of England's royal family?
-- World War I doughboys passing through England are
credited with using Crapper's name as a euphemism for
toilet, having seen "T. Crapper" emblazoned on so
many British WC fixtures?
-- Sir Thomas Crapper has such a devout following
today that the International Thomas Crapper Society
is based in Greeley, Colo.
