WHY: Hurricane evacuation and damage costs are skyrocketing and

unprecented population growth along hurricane-prone coastlines is

making evacuations ever more challenging.

In 1999, with Hurricane Dennis and Floyd, many areas of the United States experienced either mandatory or voluntary evacuations, leading to the largest population ever evacuated in American history. In the aftermath, the public and politicians expresses concern of the lengthy time of and the hardship caused by the evacuations.

Atmospheric Policy Program of the American Meteorological Society The American Meteorological Society (AMS) promotes the development and dissemination of information and education on the atmospheric and related oceanic and hydrologic sciences and the advancement of their professional applications. ,
