The panel of experts, led by Dr. Kenneth D. Mandl, will discuss how syndromic surveillance is used to identify potential infectious disease Infectious disease A pathological condition spread among biological species. Infectious diseases, although varied in their effects, are always associated with viruses, bacteria, fungi, protozoa, multicellular parasites and aberrant proteins known as prions. outbreaks in their early stages through statistical analysis of a large sample of patient symptoms. This method of infectious disease detection can serve as a critical early warning alert system to a biological attack or the spread of an infectious disease, such as SARS. Participants will learn approaches to modeling, detecting outbreaks, setting alarm thresholds, and simultaneously analyzing multiple data streams.
