TOPIC: Reanalysis supports yesterday's claim by the Distilled Spirits Council
of the United States that numbers in a report on teen alcohol use by a national
substance abuse center were inflated. MSNBC reports that yesterday's numbers
from the Columbia University National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse's
analysis of teen drinking were inflated to more than twice the correct number
due to faulty calculations and over sampling. The center acknowledged late
yesterday that it had not made a necessary adjustment when analyzing data from
the 1998 National Household Survey on Drug Abuse, MSNBC says. When adjustments
are made, the center's claim that underage drinkers now account for 25 percent
of the alcohol consumed in this country drops to 11.4 percent, the story
