TOPIC: The U.S. Senate Wednesday rejected a proposal for new strict automobile
fuel economy requirements, instead approving a more industry-friendly plan. The
amendment directs the Transportation Department to develop new fuel economy
suggestions only after considering the impact of higher mileage requirements on
manufacturing costs, passenger safety and job losses in the auto industry,
according to a story by MSNBC. The original proposal required automakers boost
the miles per gallon for vehicles, in order to cut oil imports and reduce
