TOPIC: Massachusetts is adopting the policy requiring Medicaid recipients to
take generic drugs as opposed to name-brand medications, according to an
article in the Boston Globe. Due to the increased cost of pharmaceutical drugs,
a majority of the 900,000 Massachusetts residents enrolled in Medicaid will be
affected by the policy. Although exceptions will be made based on medical need,
state officials report that doctors will have to get prior approval for
name-brand drugs, the article says. It is said the cost of drugs for Medicaid
members is estimated at $738 million. The changes are scheduled to take effect
