TOPIC: Several different polls show companies cautiously returning to hiring as
the economy shows signs of recovery. According to a story by USAToday, even
companies that had laid workers off in the last year seem to be adding
employees again. According to a survey by Accenture cited in the story, nearly
20 percent of Fortune 1,000 companies expect to hire more than 1,000 employees
in 2002. That's after nearly 40 percent of employers instituted a hiring freeze
in 2001, according to a William H. Mercer survey. According to experts in the
