TOPIC: Officials are warning doctors who fail to comply with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) was enacted by the U.S. Congress in 1996.

According to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) website, Title I of HIPAA protects health insurance coverage for workers and their families when

HIPAA requires health providers to protect patient privacy by using secure computer programs and obtaining patient signatures when sharing the patient's medical information with other providers. Physicians who treat patients receiving Medicaid must comply with the new regulations by Oct. 16.
