Summer 2000 electricity concerns and solutions for

WHY: The Department of Energy (DOE) recently announced

that this summer will mark unprecedented energy

consumption due to extreme heat. A series of

short-term actions have been undertaken by the DOE

to help ensure the reliability of the nation's power

supply in the coming months. Several regions across

the country have experienced reliability problems in

recent summers and there are concerns about the

reliability of the nation's grid this summer.

Silicon Energy has been working with partners to

deliver residential curtailment programs targeted at

to use Web Interface and database management

services to control their thermostats. Currently,

Silicon Energy is partnering with Carrier

Corporation on an Internet-based, residential

program, which enables utilities to temporarily

adjust homeowners' temperature setpoints with their

approval during peak energy demand times to reduce

energy usage.
