WHAT: Easter Seals' First Annual "Walk With Me" steps off to
support Easter Seals' programs that create solutions and
change the lives of local adults and children with
disabilities. Not just another walk, Walk With Me joins
groups of walkers with honorary team captains -- adults
and children with disabilities who have increased their
independence through Easter Seals programs. Each group
of people walks along with a team captain and learns
more about him or her throughout the one, three or five
mile walk.
The Santa Ana City Jail Juvenile Module, which holds
teens who are being tried as adults, contacted Easter
Seals to arrange a concurrent "Walk With Me" on the jail
premises. Ninety-six percent of incarcerated people will
eventually be released. The jail's juvenile education
program places a focus on who the inmates will be if
they are once again living in the community. On October
26, the incarcerated boys will dedicate the day to
walking a course on the jail grounds to raise money that
will be used to improve the lives of local people with
disabilities.
WHERE: "Walk With Me" -- Mile Square Regional Park, located at
16801 Euclid Avenue in Fountain Valley.
Concurrent Walk -- Santa Ana City Jail Youth Module,
located at 62 Civic Center Plaza in Santa Ana.
WHEN: Saturday, October 26, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.
WHO: (At the park) Walkers from throughout Orange County who
care about their community, children and adults with
disabilities serving as honorary team captains, Easter
Seals volunteers.
(At the Santa Ana City Jail Juvenile Module) Twenty
boys, ages 16 to 18, who are being tried as adults, jail
staff and youth education coordinator.
WHY: Walk With Me will raise funds to help Easter Seals
continue providing services, such as specialized day
care for children with disabilities, programs that
enable disabled adults to enter the workforce and live
in their own homes and special services that improve the
lives of seniors with Alzheimer's and their families.
The Santa Ana City Jail is participating to see that
boys who leave the facility are better than when they
came. By doing something for others, the inmates learn
that after years of living selfishly, in a small way,
they can contribute to someone else's life.
