WHY: Modern warehouses and distribution centers typically
use a warehouse management system (WMS) to manage
warehouse operations, track warehouse activity and
inventory levels as well as interface with other
software applications, including both supply chain
and enterprise systems. As many firms continue to
both outsource significant portions of their
logistics operations as well as demand more
complicated services from logistics providers, the
area of fulfillment operations is important enough
to warrant a specialized course.
WHAT: Students are assigned exercises in a full commercial
instance of the EXceed(TM) Warehouse Management
System provided by EXE Technologies (Nasdaq:EXEE).
These exercises, along with other course assignments
are designed to (1) teach students about the
fundamental operation of a distribution or
fulfillment center and the operational capabilities
of a WMS, and (2) to demonstrate and emphasize the
strategic roles that the distribution center and WMS
play in the overall supply chain.
WHEN: Thursday, October 3 - Friday, October 4, 2002
(various times available)
WHO: Ben Hood, vice president and general manager EXceed
Fulfill Business Unit. Mr. Hood can discuss the core
functions of supply chain networks from a logistics
and execution perspective, and provide insight into
global performance and measurement standards. Hood,
who co-authored "Warehouse Operations: Warehouse &
Fulfillment Operations" with Penn State professor
Douglas J. Thomas, has indispensable insight and
practical techniques for students as well as
professionals working in the supply chain.
