ADVISORY/Contestants Vie for College Scholarships as Drexel Hosts the Miss Philadelphia Pageant.

Drexel University Drexel University, at Philadelphia, Pa.; coeducational; founded 1891 by Anthony J. Drexel, opened 1892, chartered 1894 as Drexel Institute of Art, Science, and Industry. It was renamed Drexel Institute of Technology in 1936 and gained university status in 1970.  


What:       Sixteen college-age women will be vying for $15,000 in
            college scholarships as Drexel University hosts the 82nd
            annual Miss Philadelphia Pageant on Saturday. Miss
            Philadelphia 2002, Bethany Watson, will emcee the pageant.
            The Shooting Stars Mummers Brigade and the Drexel a
            cappella group Eight to the Bar will perform.

            The five areas of judging include interview (40 percent),
            talent (30 percent), swimsuit (10 percent), evening wear
            (10 percent) and composite score (10 percent). The pageant
            is a preliminary to July's Miss Pennsylvania Pageant and
            September's Miss America Pageant, the country's largest
            source for college scholarship funds for women.

            The University will match the $15,000 in scholarships for
            any contestants who are eligible to enroll at Drexel.
            Watson won a scholarship after winning last year's pageant
            and is enrolled at Drexel as a communications major.

            --  Crowning of Miss Philadelphia 2003 -- 10:30 p.m.

            --  Reception, scholarship presentations -- 10:45 p.m. -
                12:30 p.m.

            streets)
