             Philadelphia

WHAT:        A conference on "Safe Communities/Safe Families" will
             explore the ways the city of Boston has successfully
             reduced crime; evaluate what is happening in Philadelphia
             neighborhoods; brainstorm ways religious institutions can
             work with neighborhood associations, residents and the
             police to make communities safer; and discuss the
             kinds of public policies needed to prevent crime before
             it happens.

WHO:         Christine James-Brown, president of United Way, will serve
             as the conference moderator. Conference speakers
             include: John F. Timoney, Commissioner, Philadelphia
             Police; Mayor Ed Rendell; Mark Soler, President, Youth
             Law Center; James Mills, Philadelphia Anti-Drug Anti
             Violence Network; Huntley Palmer, US Attorney General's
             Office; Joan Reeves, Dept. of Human Services; and many
             others.

HIGHLIGHTS:  8:30 a.m. - Combating Urban Crime -- Philadelphia and
              the Nation

             Christine James-Brown, welcomes everyone and introduces
             keynote presenters: John F. Timoney, Commissioner,
             Philadelphia Police Department; Mayor Ed Rendell; and
             Mark Soler, President, Youth Law Center.

             10:30 a.m. - Workshops: Public Policy on Drugs, Guns and
             Community Renewal; Reclaiming Neighborhoods; Crime
             Prevention: Youth Programs and Policy I; New Approaches
             to Ending Family Violence.

             Noon - The Boston Experience: What Philadelphia is
              Learning

             Rev. Eugene Rovers, Pastor, Azusa Christian Community,
             Boston and Co- founder, Boston TenPoint Coalition;
             Francine Sherman, Director of the Juvenile Rights Advocacy
             Project and Adjunct Associate Professor, Boston College
             Law School; and Michael DiBerardinis, Commissioner,
             Philadelphia Department of Recreation.

             2 p.m. Workshops: Crime Prevention: Youth Programs
             and Policy II; The Media and the Culture of Violence;
             Reaching Our Young Men.
