The ribbon cutting ceremony A ribbon cutting ceremony is a public ceremony conducted to inaugurate the opening to the general public of a new building or business. Often, it is conducted in just the manner the name suggests: by tying a ceremonial ribbon across the main entrance of the building, which will begin at 9:00 a.m. followed by tours of the facility conducted by city employees. State and local dignitaries have been invited. The project includes a 34,000 SF addition and a 33,000 SF renovation of the existing facility located on the 85 acre wooded site off Avon Road just west of Livernois. Mayor Somerville noted that the newly renovated 67,000 SF building "will meet the needs of the 140 onsite city employees as they provide service to the public. It is a reflection of the positive growth of the city today while meeting the needs of the public into the future."
