Guardino to Launch City Year's New Corps


WHAT:    City Year's First National Opening Day, 2002-2003 Service
         Corps

         On Tuesday, October 1, 2002, over 1,000 young leaders will
         pledge to serve America by taking the City Year pledge,
         setting the tone for an intense year where fellow corps
         members across the nation will be united in their passion for
         and commitment to service.

         City Year corps members will answer President Bush's
         post-9/11 "call to service" by devoting a minimum of 1,700
         hours during his or her "city year."

         These idealistic young leaders will mentor and tutor
         elementary school students, teach social issues curricula and
         run after-school programs.

WHO:     1,000 City Year Corps Members nationally (90 in San Jose)
         PLUS a host of City Year Champions, including former Mayor
         Susan Hammer, Assemblywoman Elaine Alquist, San Jose Police
         Chief William Lansdowne, Silicon Valley Manufacturing Group
         CEO Carl Guardino.

WHEN:    TUESDAY, OCTOBER 1, 2002 10:00 AM - 11:30 AM

SERVICE: CAPTURE CORPS MEMBERS AND CORPORATE CHAMPIONS IN ACTION
         Immediately following the Ceremony, corps members will
         participate in a variety of service projects at the following
         sites: Horace Mann Elementary, KR Smith Elementary, Sacred
         Heart Community Services Agency and The Emergency Housing
         Consortium. Service will include activities such as mural
         paintings, landscaping, and mentoring students in
         after-school programs.
