ADVISORY/China May Deport Convicted U.S. Residents.

Business Editors

ADVISORY...

--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 25, 2001
TOPIC: According to a story by CNN, Secretary of State Colin Powell reportedly
hinted to the press Wednesday that U.S. scholars detained in China and
convicted on spy charges may be deported in coming days, rather than serving
prison time in China. Gao Zhan and Qin Guangguang, two Chinese-born U.S.
residents were reportedly convicted recently by China on charges of spying for
Taiwan and were sentenced to 10-year prison terms, the story said. Powell plans
to visit China on Saturday, and according to experts cited in the story, a
Chinese decision to deport the scholars before his visit may improve the
atmosphere of the meetings and make them more productive. EXPERTS: ExpertSource
