When: Tuesday, April 11 at 11:05 a.m.
Who: Chandy Nilakantan, CTO and Vice President of Engineering
for SkyStream Networks. Prior to joining SkyStream,
Nilakantan was vice president and general manager of the
Enterprise WAN Division at 3Com.
What: The Internet has proven itself to be a great transactional
network, but falls woefully short when it comes to
delivering services to any moderately sized communities or
subscriber bases. One of the biggest challenges with the
Internet is scalability -- particularly for delivering
broadband services that are a fundamental requirement for
stimulating commerce.
Present-day broadcast infrastructures, such as satellite,
cable and terrestrial networks possess built-in
scalability and have the means to deliver broadband
services very effectively. However, they lack the
following:
-- The ability to seamlessly integrate Internet content
with traditional programming (enhanced television).
-- The ability to re-purpose content to suit the
interests of multiple communities simultaneously
(targeted services).
-- The ability to convert consumer interest stimulated by
the targeted service instantaneously into a purchase
(Internet commerce).
Chandy Nilakantan will help the audience to understand:
-- The network infrastructure requirements for delivering
broadband Internet services.
-- How to combine the best of these broadcast
infrastructures with the best of the Internet.
-- The state of the technology available to the
marketplace and new technology appearing on the
horizon.
