Center (LAC+USC), Los Angeles Unified School District
(LAUSD), Montebello Unified School District (MUSD), South
Coast Air Quality Management District (AQMD), and Assembly
Majority Floor Leader Marco A. Firebaugh.
This collaborative effort is helping to bring hope to
asthmatic children and their families and is "Keeping Kids
In-School and Out of the Emergency Rooms!"
WHY: To help increase public awareness of the severity of asthma.
Asthma is epidemic in California and rising at a staggering rate.
Children are especially impacted, missing 10 million school days a
year. Asthma is the No. 1 cause of childhood visits to the emergency
room.
To address this problem, AAFA sponsors a mobile asthma treatment
clinic, the BREATHMOBILE(R), which brings free medical care to
children at their schools. The first mobile was started in 1995 in
partnership with LAC+USC and LAUSD. Currently there are four
BREATHMOBILES(R). The fourth BREATHMOBILE(R) was made possible by the
interest and community leadership of Assembly Majority Floor Leader
Marco A. Firebaugh and the South Coast Air Quality Management
District. The fourth BREATHMOBILE(R) serves schools in both the Los
Angeles Unified School District and Montebello Unified School
District.
The program at the San Miguel School will include educational displays
and musical entertainment provided by the singing group "Music Heals."
The BREATHMOBILE(R) will be open to the public, offering an
opportunity to speak with the physician-in-charge, Tania Kimia, MD.
The program is open to interested parents.
