High school students from across the U.S. and Canada will convene next week in Amherst, Massachusetts Amherst is a town in Hampshire County, Massachusetts, United States in the Connecticut River valley. At the 2000 census, the population was 34,874. The town is home to Amherst College, Hampshire College, and the University of Massachusetts Amherst, three of the Five Colleges. , to participate in North America's largest high school environmental competition. Participants will learn about environmental issues affecting natural resources as they compete for awards in the 2002 Canon Envirothon. This 15th annual gathering of high schoolers interested in gaining a better understanding of conservation will be at Hampshire College Hampshire College, at Amherst, Mass.; coeducational; opened 1970. The emphasis of the academic program is on the individual needs of the students. Hampshire participates in a cooperative arrangement with Amherst, Smith, and Mount Holyoke colleges and the Univ. . This year 49 teams, 42 from the U.S. and seven from Canada, involving over 250 students will compete in the 2002 Canon Envirothon for a share of the $30,000 in college scholarships that will be awarded to help continue their educations. Teams will be tested on their knowledge of soils, forestry, wildlife, aquatics and the effects of introduced species on local environments. The Canon Envirothon is the culmination of a series of competitions that began this past spring involving more than 500,000 teenagers throughout North America. In written tests and oral presentations, five member teams from schools or organizations strove for the distinction of representing their state or province at the Canon Envirothon. Each team's knowledge will be tested under the supervision of foresters, soil scientists, and wildlife specialists.
