CLEVELAND--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 16, 2003

The Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority will host the dedication ceremony for the Carl B. Stokes Carl Burton Stokes (June 21 1927–April 3 1996) was an American politician of the Democratic party who served as the 51st mayor of Cleveland, Ohio. Elected on November 7, 1967, he was the first African American mayor of a major U.S. city. Fellow Ohioan Robert C.  Ohio Historical Marker on Tuesday, June 17, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. at the Carl B. The Honorable Carl B. Stokes was the first African American African American Multiculture A person having origins in any of the black racial groups of Africa. See Race.  democrat elected to the Ohio legislature. He was also the first African American elected Mayor of a major American City. Stokes served as judge of the Cleveland Municipal Court and was appointed by President Bill Clinton as ambassador to the Seychelles. He died on April 3, 1996.

The Carl B. Stokes Marker is one of several honoring African Americans who made major contributions to Ohio history. These markers are being dedicated during the month of June as part of the Ohio Bicentennial celebration and were sponsored by Cinergy.
