WHAT: Brooks Sports Inc. concludes its 2002 Muddy Buddy(R) Ride and
Run Series with the World Championships on Catalina Island on
December 6. Unlike regional races, the World Championships
will feature 26.2 miles of challenging running and mountain
biking trails. Participants will also climb more than 4,000
feet and face diverse obstacles such as an ocean challenge,
mud pit and a steep cargo net wall.

WHERE: Catalina Island off the coast of southern California
DETAILS: Winners from 2002 regional races have qualified to compete in
the Brooks Muddy Buddy(R) World Championships. The Brooks
Muddy Buddy(R) works like a relay. One participant is running
while the other is biking. Throughout the championships
event, five obstacles will be designated as mandatory
transition points. Unlike other Brooks Muddy Buddy(R) events,
participants will have the option of transitioning as often
as needed throughout the race. Mile markers will be displayed
on the course as optional transition points.
The race begins at 11 a.m. at Twin Harbors and will culminate
in downtown Avalon (the only city on the island). Race
divisions include elite, co-ed, male, female and Beast (team
combined weight of more than 400 pounds). Elite athletes
including Mountain Bike World Champion and Specialized
athlete, Ned Overend, 2001 US Cycling Tour title winner,
Trent Klasna, and three-time top 10 Hawaii Ironman finisher,
Paul Huddle, will compete in the event on December 6.
CHARITY: The Brooks Muddy Buddy(R) Ride & Run Series benefits the Challenged Athletes Foundation, an organization that reaches out to people with disabilities by helping them pursue a more active lifestyle through physical fitness and competitive sports. Challenged athletes Ivan Steber and Paul Martin will participate in the championship event on December 6.
