WHAT: Second Helping, a perishable food rescue program, was
founded in 1989 as a joint program of The Greater Boston Food

Second Helping provides nearly 156,000 meals to 22 emergency
feeding programs throughout eastern Massachusetts.
Second Helping is a critical link between restaurants, hotels,
hospitals, caterers, and corporate cafeterias seeking to donate
surplus food to area non-profit shelters that feed Boston's
hungry. The program has over 170 participating donors including,
Boston College Dining Services, Streamline, Sodexho Marriott,
Bread & Circus, Lantana, Brighams & Women's Hospital, Saint
Elizabeth's Hospital, Tuft's University, and Newbury College
Culinary Arts Department. Many local signature events also
donate surplus food to Second Helping including The Ryder Cup,
The Boston Marathon, The International Seafood Show, and others.

$125,000 in 1999. The Gala is co-sponsored by the Boston Red
Sox, which donates, among other things, the venue of the 600
