WHO: In a dramatic show of solidarity, more than 40 Black churches
throughout Los Angeles County will unite to commemorate World
AIDS Day on Sunday, December 1 as a time for remembrance and
hope. The Urban Church Task Force on HIV/AIDS - a coalition of
inter-denominational churches - is working with the Los Angeles
County Department of Health Services to address the alarming
spread of HIV and AIDS among African Americans through a
proactive church-outreach initiative.

devastation caused by AIDS; therefore, we must stand together and

In Los Angeles County, 25 percent of all AIDS cases are among
African Americans, even though African Americans represent only
about 10 percent of the county's population.
In the U.S., it is estimated that at least half of all new HIV
infections are among people under the age of 25. Of this
population, young African Americans are most heavily affected,
accounting for more than 65 percent of all HIV cases reported
among 13 to 24 year olds.
