News Editors

ADVISORY...for Sunday Sunday: see Sabbath; week.  (Dec. 1)

--(BUSINESS WIRE)

WHO: In a dramatic show of solidarity, more than 40 Black churches
throughout Los Angeles County will unite to commemorate World
AIDS Day on Sunday, December 1 as a time for remembrance and
hope. The Urban Church Task Force on HIV/AIDS - a coalition of
inter-denominational churches - is working with the Los Angeles
County Department of Health Services to address the alarming
spread of HIV and AIDS among African Americans through a
     proactive church-outreach initiative.

WHY: "The Black Community continues to suffer terribly from the
devastation caused by AIDS; therefore, we must stand together and
act now." - Reverend Norman S. Johnson Jr. of First New Christian
     Missionary Baptist Church

In Los Angeles County, 25 percent of all AIDS cases are among
African Americans, even though African Americans represent only
about 10 percent of the county's population.
In the U.S., it is estimated that at least half of all new HIV
infections are among people under the age of 25. Of this
population, young African Americans are most heavily affected,
accounting for more than 65 percent of all HIV cases reported
among 13 to 24 year olds.

WHAT: Special World AIDS Day services will be held at more than 40
Black churches throughout Los Angeles County, including the
      following:

Bryant Temple AME 7:55 a.m. service
