(Nov. 1) --(BUSINESS WIRE)
WHAT: A free, live Web event at www.beyondbooks.com where
students, teachers and political buffs across the nation may
join a rousing question-and-answer session about our third
president, Thomas Jefferson, and our nation's political
process with renowned author Professor Joseph Ellis of Mount
Holyoke College. Ellis, winner of the 1997 National Book Award
for "American Sphinx: The Character of Thomas Jefferson," has
just released "Founding Brothers: The Revolutionary
Generation" (Knopf), a study of the intertwined lives of the
founders of the American republic. He authored the Aug. 21
U.S. News & World Report cover story, "The First Democrats,"
which discussed the development of our nation's two-party
political system.
With Election 2000 less than two weeks away, polls show Vice
President Al Gore and Gov. George W. Bush in an almost dead heat, with
each candidate's camp slinging its share of mud at the opponent.
Similarly, the election of 1800, which brought Jefferson to the White
House, was an emotional and hard-fought battle wherein each side
believed victory by the other would destroy our fledgling nation. How
do our current leaders (and candidates) compare?
Participants may join the video-streamed online chat at no cost,
