Astral Point Communications Chief Technology Officer Dr. Pierre Humblet will examine the key characteristics of future metropolitan networks -- from optical, data traffic and business perspectives in an address next week at LEOS 2001. LEOS 2001 is the 14th annual meeting of the Lasers and Electro-Optics Society of the IEEE. Dr. Humblet's session will be held on Wednesday, November 14 at 9:15am pst. The conference is being held from November 12-15 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in La Jolla, CA.

Dr. Humblet will present a paper entitled "Metro Area Optical Networks: Technologies and Trends." He will discuss the evolving role of SONET, Resilient Packet Ring See RPR.  (RPR), virtual concatenation, modular Dense Wave Division Multiplexing (spelling) wave division multiplexing - A common misnomer for wavelength division multiplexing.  (DWDM (Dense WDM) The term given to wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) when significantly more channels were being added. Since WDM is increasingly more "dense" all the time, both terms are used synonymously. See WDM.
