BACKGROUND: As it develops its West Coast route network, American Airlines has
made San Jose International Airport a focal point for growth and expansion,
building on San Jose's robust economy, the high-tech leadership of the Silicon
Valley, and the area's strategic geographical location. So far this year,
American has added 17 daily departures at San Jose to points like Honolulu,
Denver, Phoenix, New York JFK, Dallas/Fort Worth, Chicago and Los Angeles. Two
more points will be added on Dec. 15 with American's introduction of San Jose
service to Maui and Miami. This will boost the airline's total operations at
San Jose to 73 flights a day. Now, American is poised to announce important new
international routes that will enhance San Jose's standing as a major
