WHAT: In its continued efforts to bridge the "digital divide,"
3Com has forged a new initiative with AmeriCorps*VISTA to
support the Urban Challenge Program. The innovative
collaboration with the Corporation for National Service will
place AmeriCorps*VISTA members with projects that are awarded
Urban Challenge grants. As a public/private initiative, this
alliance will leverage the technological solutions of 3Com's
digital divide efforts with the people-power of dedicated
AmeriCorps*VISTA members.

WHERE: The 68th Annual Conference of Mayors, Seattle
HISTORY: The 3Com Urban Challenge helps to bridge the "digital divide"
by working directly with U.S. mayors to connect their
communities and improve access to educational, health care
and other municipal resources. The program has grown from
3Com's proven success in implementing networks in urban
environments such as Boston and San Jose, Calif.
In January 2000, 3Com presented $1 million in grants of
networking products and technical consulting services to the
mayors of 10 U.S. cities that won the company's Urban
Challenge announced in July 1999 in partnership with the US
Conference of Mayors. 3Com also announced Urban Challenge
will extend through the year 2000 to 10 additional U.S.
cities for a total of another $1 million. Today's
announcement will provide the next 10 winning cities with the
people-power of dedicated AmeriCorps*VISTA members with the
technological solutions of 3Com.
The 10 cities that received technology grants in January
from 3Com include Baltimore; Charleston, S.C.; Chaska, Minn.;
Chester, Penn.; Denver; Glasgow, Ky.; Madison, Wis.; New
Orleans; Pontiac, Mich.; and Providence, R. I.
The application deadline for the new round of grants is
December 1, 2000; grants will be awarded on a rolling basis.
The winners will be announced at the 69th Winter Meeting of
The U.S. Conference of Mayors in January 2001. For
