Competitions Show Off Their Incredible Inventions and Ideas

WHAT:       The future will be on display in Washington, D.C. this
            weekend when the bright student winners of the 2001
            Toshiba/NSTA ExploraVision Awards program, one of the
            world's largest K-12 student science and technology
            competitions, gather in the nation's capitol for an awards
            weekend celebration. The festivities will include a visit
            to Capitol Hill for the eight winning student teams to
            meet their local Congressman, a science showcase where the
            students will display and demonstrate their winning ideas
            and a special awards banquet.

              -   Contact lens that interact directly with the brain to
                function as binoculars or magnifying glasses on
                command of the wearer (Anchorage, AK)

              -   Underwater Dive suits with artificial hemoglobin
                tubing to attract oxygen in the water (Katy, TX)

              -   A "cavity-zapping" toothbrush with fiber-optic
                bristles to detect cavity-causing bacteria. (Metairie,
                LA)

              -   A coronary implant device that detects heart failure
                and applies instant remedies (Santa Rosa, CA)

              -   A small alarm that alerts you when library books are
                due, and helps you find them (Rochester, NY)

              -   Bandages equipped with microchips that not only stop
                bleeding, but also diagnoses serious illness, clean
                wounds, and relay vital signs to a worldwide database

              -   A hybrid combustion/electrical engine powered by

            4,000 team entries representing more than 12,000 students
            across the U.S. and Canada.
