WHAT: As a preview to the 9th Annual Wings Over Gillespie Airshow,
meet Michael Aten, Scott Hazel and Ben Barackman of San Diego
who are constructing a replica of a 1902 Wright Brothers glider
in a Ramona airport hanger.
The Wings Over Gillespie Air Show is scheduled for
May 2-4, 2003 at Gillespie Field in El Cajon, just 20 minutes
East of downtown San Diego. Presented by Air Group One, the San
Diego Wing of the Commemorative Air Force (CAF), the theme of
the 2003 air show will pay tribute to the 100th Anniversary of
the first successful powered airplane flight. The Wright
Brothers built the first plane in 1903 and the replica will be
on display for the public during the air show.
WHY: In honor of the 100th anniversary of the Wright Brothers'
planes, a replica of the last glider ever constructed by the
Wright brothers before motorized planes is being built. The
glider was also the first plane to be controllable in all
flight axes -- pitch, roll and yaw.
