ADVISORY/ Osteoporosis Is for ``The Birds!''; Golden Globe Award-Winner Tippi Hedren Sets Stage for Other Women During National Osteoporosis Prevention Month.Lifestyle/Entertainment Editors & Health/Medical Writers ADVISORY...for Wednesday Wednesday: see week. (May 10) --(BW HealthWire)
WHAT: Actress Tippi Hedren, the star of more than twenty-five
feature films and numerous television appearances ("The
Birds," "Pacific Heights"), will join forces with prestigious
Orthopaedic Hospital to promote National Osteoporosis
Prevention Month (May 2000) and educate women about this
crippling, bone-thinning disease. The Golden Globe
Award-winning actress will receive a state-of-the-art "DEXA"
screening by internationally renowned bone density expert,
Robert K. Rude, MD. The screening is considered to be the
best technique available (gold standard), and scans both the
hip and spine -- both major sites of osteoporotic fracture.
This screening is a painless X-ray procedure that takes less
than half an hour.
Currently, over 28 million Americans, mostly women, suffer
from osteoporosis, and many continue their daily routines
without knowing that they can prevent osteoporotic fracture
and other related injuries. "I recommend any women over the
age of 50, who have risk factors for osteoporosis, and
definitely post-menopausal women over the age of 65, be
screened," Dr. Rude urges. "This is a prominent problem in
our culture, and while women as young as 35 may have early
signs of bone deterioration, women at the age of 50 have a
40% chance of fracturing their spine, wrist or hip." Although
the risk for men is 1/3 of that for women, Dr. Rude strongly
suggests that men over the age of 65 be screened as well.
