WHAT: Awards for the best CANSTRUCTION(R) sculptures will be
presented on Thursday at the Museum of Science in Boston. For
the past three weeks, visitors to the Museum and South Station
have been able to enjoy first-hand, sculptures that were
created out of canned and packaged food that were designed by
seventeen of Boston's finest architecture and design firms.
Sculptures included replicas of The Grinch, the Citgo Sign, a
Boston Lobster, a Red Sox hat, an Octopus and many more. The
sculptures were judged by a panel including John Wilson of
Payette Associates, Len Cubellis of Cubellis Associates, Mark
Maloney of The Boston Redevelopment Authority, Catherine
D'Amato of The Greater Boston Food Bank, Steven Krupski of
Stop & Shop and E. Verner Johnson of E. Verner Johnson
Associates. Winners will be announced in various categories
such as Best Use of Labels, Structural Ingenuity, Friend of
the Food Bank (Best Meal), Juror's Favorite, Spirit of Boston,
Best Kid's Meal and 2 honorable mentions.
CANSTRUCTION(R) a project for the architectural and design
community to CANstruct a world without hunger was on display
since October 23. During the three week effort, visitors to
the Museum of Science and South Station were encouraged to
bring cans of food as part of Mayor Menino's Can Share Food
Drive, which ran concurrently with CANSTRUCTION(R). All of the
food from the sculptures and the Food Drive will be donated to
The Greater Boston Food Bank.
