With the advent of active directories and other dynamic tools used on infrastructures these days, the "fragility" of the network environment increases with every new interconnection tool. It's becoming easier to disrupt network operations by disabling or killing DNS (Domain Name System) A system for converting host names and domain names into IP addresses on the Internet or on local networks that use the TCP/IP protocol. For example, when a Web site address is given to the DNS either by typing a URL in a browser or behind the , DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) Software that automatically assigns temporary IP addresses to client stations logging into an IP network. It eliminates having to manually assign permanent "static" IP addresses. DHCP software runs in servers and routers. , LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) A protocol used to access a directory listing. LDAP support is implemented in Web browsers and e-mail programs, which can query an LDAP-compliant directory. , X.509 CA's, and many other servers and systems that make corporate network infrastructure. This is a session about "hardening up" the network infrastructure to make it more survivable sur·viv·a·ble adj. 1. Capable of surviving: survivable organisms in a hostile environment. 2. That can be survived: a survivable, but very serious, illness. in real networking environments. Topics will include network security for servers, router filters and configuration issues, switch placement and management, internal firewalls and distributed firewalls, securing authentication servers and other related topics.
