ADVISORY/ Assembly Majority Leader Kevin Shelley Featured At Press Conference to Launch Revitalization of Local Businesses During the Cannery Comeback Party.News Editors ADVISORY...for Tuesday Tuesday: see week. (June June: see month. 25) TUESDAY, JUNE 25, 2002 AT 5:15 P.M. PST PST Paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia, see there
WHAT: Assembly Majority Leader Kevin Shelley, alongside several
affected independent merchants, will discuss the ongoing
efforts to rebuild Cannery and waterfront businesses and will
help launch a major revival of the Fisherman's Wharf tourism
industry.
WHY: After more than 100 media stories reported that the fire at
the Haslett Warehouse had also burned The Cannery, merchants
within The Cannery suffered a dramatic downturn in business.
Assembly Majority Leader Kevin Shelley is working on behalf of
these independent merchants to settle outstanding insurance
claims and restore activity to The Cannery's shops and
restaurants.
"We have suffered a tremendous setback after the Haslett
Warehouse fire because many, many people think that we've
burnt down. Business prior to the fire was beginning to return
to pre-September 11, 2001, levels. The added difficulties of
street closures, other construction-related obstacles, and
hassles with insurance claims, have posed a real problem for
businesses in the area. We are here to set the record
straight, to appeal to those groups who can support us, namely
San Franciscans, taxi drivers, cable car gripmen, to tell the
local community that we are behind the revitalization of the
waterfront and to tell the world: `The Cannery is open for
business!'"
-- Chris Martin, Managing Partner, The Cannery
The Cannery neighborhood extravaganza, the Cannery Comeback
Party, will be held on Tuesday, June 25, from 4 to 8 p.m.
Featuring Can-Can girls, an awards ceremony for firemen and
other local heroes who helped fight the five-alarm fire, free
tours of Hyde Street Pier and the historic waterfront, a
salmon BBQ, 75-cent Anchor Steam beer, local comedians and the
first annual "Taxi Drivers Trivia" game, the event will serve
to rally Fisherman's Wharf and local San Francisco
neighborhoods behind revitalizing tourism in San Francisco.
Assembly Majority Leader Kevin Shelley will speak at 5:15 p.m.
during the event.
WHERE: The corner of Beach and Columbus Streets, aboard a 1955 Mack
fire engine.
