WHAT: Yesterday, following the air disaster in the Rockaways
section of New York City, Salvation Army grief
counselors and volunteers were immediately on the
scene providing meals to rescue workers and counseling
to the friends and family members of the victims.
Today, a team of Salvation Army officers began
assisting at the Jacob Javits Center in Manhattan by
providing Spanish-speaking translators to assist with
missing person forms while on-site counselors
continued to prayer with family members and provide
grief and trauma counseling.
In less than an hour following the World Trade Center
and Pentagon disasters, Salvation Army emergency
support teams were on site providing food, shelter,
supplies and grief counseling to victims and rescue
personnel. They continue to be there today providing
counseling, food and financial assistance to families
for rent/mortgage, utilities, food and insurance
costs.
The Salvation Army is providing a full range of social
services to families affected by the disaster at the
Family Service Center and the Family Assistance Center
in New York.
The Salvation Army of Greater Philadelphia has
deployed six emergency canteens, more than 80
officers, nearly 600 volunteers, and teams of
specially-trained grief and trauma counselors to the
World Trade Center disaster site since September 11th.
