Multimedia presentations, a shadow puppet puppet, human or animal figure, generally of a small size and performing on a miniature stage, manipulated by an unseen operator who usually speaks the dialogue.  performance, panel discussions, and a story-sharing bonfire will be part of the conference activities during the Fourth Language Is Life Gathering, which begins a 2 p.m. Friday, March 17 and ends at 1 p.m. on Sunday March 19.

Native California languages face extinction within the next decade. Of the nearly 100 indigenous languages Noun 1. indigenous language - a language that originated in a specified place and was not brought to that place from elsewhere

 once spoken here, half have no fluent speakers, 17 have only one to five, and the remaining 36 languages have only elderly speakers. When these languages are lost the customs, values, and history they embody will also be lost.

Efforts to reverse this quiet vanishing of cultures received a boost recently with the formation of a new partnership between the Advocates for Indigenous California Language Survival (AICLS) and the California Council for the Humanities. The two organizations are the primary sponsors of the Language Is Life Gathering.
