ADVENTURE RACING TEAMS TO COMPETE.

The Hi-Tec Adventure Racing Series will host the nation's first adventure racing national championship Sunday at Castaic Lake Castaic Lake is a lake on Castaic Creek formed by Castaic Dam, in northwestern Los Angeles County, California, near the town of Castaic. The 323,700 acre foot lake (399,000,000 m³) is the terminus of the West Branch of the California Aqueduct, though some comes from the 154 mi² .

Adventure racing is the weekend athlete's dream come true with three-member teams competing together on 5- to 8-mile trail runs, a one-hour kayaking Kayaking is the use of a kayak for moving across water. Kayaking is differentiated from canoeing by the fact that a kayak has a closed cockpit and a canoe has an open cockpit. They also use a two bladed paddle. Special mystery tests after each event allow for much speculation among participants.

More than 200 teams of three are scheduled to compete in a program that combines components and disciplines used for survival in the outdoors.

Endurance is the key in adventure racing as each team works with a constantly changing terrain in the wilderness.

The series began in July in Hartford, Conn., and continued to Miami and then Pittsburgh. The championship series will be taped for an ESPN ESPN Entertainment and Sports Programming Network 2 special that will air at 1 p.m. Nov. 26 and 7:30 a.m. Dec. 6.
