EVENS AND ODDS is wrestling with Redford for favouritism but a word of warning, only one favourite has claimed the Ayr Gold Cup in the last 30 years.

Second in the Stewards' Cup behind Genki, Evens And Odds hasn't run since. His form on the two runs before Glorious Goodwood showed why he was 33-1 that day, he's not my choice.

David Nicholls has won five of the last nine Ayr Gold Cups and has six representatives this year, in addition, note, he has won three of the last nine Ayr Silver Cups.

Redford's name was the first to be called on Thursday morning for theWilliam Hill Ayr Gold Cup draw and his representative plumped for stall 26.

Garnica is different class to these if ignoring his last two runs. He has the required form over seven furlongs, but his preference is for soft. Valery Borzov is another who wants cut. Sonny Red has promised much, but produced nothing as yet and Striking Spirit is held by the handicapper. David Nicholls best chance may be with Fol Hollow, extremely consistent, blinding draw by the rail, no weight and often tries to lead all the way so shouldn't find any trouble in running.

Sorry to remind you the last Scottish-trained winner was Roman Warrior back in 1975, a fact Jim Goldie and colleagues are keen to rectify, yet I don't think it will be this year. It's not soft enough for Hogmaneigh and this is probably too short a trip for Abbondanza.

Blue Jack had been a sprinter on a roll, however that came to an untimely end at Haydock last week, I'd avoid. Arganil was my tip that day and I'd thought he would win only to be outgunned in the last few strides, still he has another blinding chance, especially as stable jockey Neil Callan has picked him.

Signor Peltro was unlucky to encounter an in form Marching Time at Goodwood. He is another with the strength over seven furlongs but the speed for six. Knot In Wood was fourth last year, but I think he'll go better this time around. Redford has quality seven furlong form, should adapt to the drop in trip and has an obvious favourite's chance. Genki has been lightly raced, rewarding connections with a win in the Stewards' Cup. Advanced won the race in 2007 and is on a mark to do so again.

He'll have to do all the hard work of dragging the low numbers into contention in the latter stages. In summary, I think the lady riders will dominate the places with ADVANCED (3.10) winning from Redford, Fol Hollow and Knot In Wood sneaking in the frame.

Only one of the last ten Ayr Silver Cup winners have been aged older than five, rather a shame as I fancied Johannes. He was incredibly unlucky in the Portland Handicap at Doncaster last week, missing the kick and finding traffic problems drawn the wrong side.

At least eight of the last ten winners of the Ayr Silver Cup have been drawn high and Johannes is ideally positioned in stall 28. He needs to be a bit more lively when the stalls open though. Prescription has been favourite on seven of the eight occasions he has run, winning four.

Trained by Sir Mark Prescott he's bound to be popular. This represents a huge step up in class to anything he has raced against up to now but try and stop the genial Newmarket handler finding improvement in one of his handicappers. Others who come in to contention are Aye Aye Digby, Roker Park, My Gacho, Master Of Disguise and Tuesday's Haydock winner Cape Vale.

River Falcon has ran at this meeting for six consecutive years, in two ASilver Cups and four Gold Cups. His best finish being sixth in the 2007 Gold Cup. He's raced 13 times overall at Ayr and never won.Yet Jim Goldie could, I'm hoping train the winner, I had SEA OF LEAVES (2.05) as my nap selection for the Portland last week until she defected at the last minute. I stand by her again, ignoring her last run, her second to Bounty Box is sufficient to contest here. If you want a selection on either side then I have to pick Johannes.

Hayley Turner has a great book of rides at Ayr and she could start the day off on the right stride with CENTIGRADE (1.35) forWilliam Haggas. She rode him on his debut fourth and he has since progressed to win atWarwick. I'd be disappointed if BEYOND DESIRE (2.35) can't win the Firth Of Clyde Stakes, especially after her second in the Lowther. Despite a year layoff LADY GLORIA (4.25) could go close in the Doonside Cup.

AUTHENTIC (5.00) is my pick in the mile handicap and HUNTING TOWER (5.35) in the lucky last.

Newbury has a strong and competitive card and in the John Smith's Handicap Charm School's penalty will stop him following up his Kempton win. Class Is Class is very laboured early in his races which gives him too much to make up in last two furlongs. Antinori a big fancy for next month's Cambridgeshire having been a brave second to Fanjura at Sandown last month. Royal Destination won under ride of the season from Frankie Dettori atYork, more of the same is needed by Kieren Fallon.

Cill Rialaig has sneaked under the radar this season, brilliantly guided by Hughie Morrison, he'll be the each-way value. BROOMIELAW (2.50) is sheer class and been kept in training to prove such. Mick Kinane's a bonus, get on.

Brian Meehan's last seven Mill Reef runners have all been beaten had he saddles RADIOHEAD (2.20pm). His opponents look out of the top drawer, yet it's hard to ignore Radiohead's third in the Nunthorpe.

In Newmarket's Cesarewitch trial, the horse to watch, and you can't miss him is the enormous grey AAJEL (3.40). Heavily backed already for the his October 17 engagement he ought to win today.
