ADVANCED SURGICAL LICENSES FIRST DEVICE FOR NON-SURGICAL APPLICATION

 -- Device Offers Convenient, Cost-Effective
 Treatment of Urinary Incontinence --
PRINCETON, N.J., Sept. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Advanced Surgical, Inc. (NASDAQ: ASUR) today announced it has signed a license agreement granting Advanced Surgical exclusive world-wide manufacturing and marketing rights to a device for the treatment of female urinary incontinence.
The device licensed by Advanced Surgical was designed by a group of practicing physicians specializing in the treatment of urological disorders. Advanced Surgical will undertake a comprehensive program to complete the device's development process, carry out clinical trials and seek product approval from the United States Food and Drug Administration. Terms of the license agreement were not disclosed.
"We were impressed with the potential for this system to be a convenient and cost-effective treatment," said Howard Schrayer, President and CEO of Advanced Surgical. "With the license of this incontinence device, our first for a non-surgical application, Advanced Surgical effectively has expanded its product line to meet today's real clinical challenges. This is a significant step in our strategic business plan."
Urinary stress incontinence affects up to 30 percent of all adult women over the age of 60, including at least 1.5 million nursing home residents in the United States, according to a U.S. Department of Health and Human Services report published in March 1992. Based upon data available in the report, it is estimated that the direct costs associated with the care of women with urinary incontinence exceed $8 billion annually.
"There is a significant need for devices to treat incontinence," said Robert Shaw, M.D., a practicing urologist and one of the designers of the device. "Female incontinence is currently underserved by today's technology. Current methods are awkward, bulky and restrict a patient's lifestyle. This device could potentially open a new avenue of treatment -- one that may improve a patient's quality of life."
The device is a valved catheter which is sized and inserted by a physician during a brief office visit. The device is replaced on a monthly basis during a routine follow-up visit which allows a physician or nurse to closely monitor the patient. The new product is the subject of a pending patent application and could be available in the United States in 1995 pending completion of the development program and FDA approval.
"We believe one of the major advantages of this device will be its relatively low cost," said Schrayer. "In fact, we anticipate that the monthly cost of the product and accompanying professional care will be no more than the current cost of adult absorbent pads -- a plus in today's cost-conscious healthcare environment."
Advanced Surgical, Inc., headquartered in Princeton, New Jersey, is a publicly held medical device company. The company designs, develops, manufactures, and distributes a variety of products for use in minimally invasive surgery.
