ADVANCED POLYMER SYSTEMS ANNOUNCES SALES, MARKETING AND PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT AGREEMENT WITH SMITHKLINE BEECHAM

REDWOOD CITY, Calif., Sept. 30 /PRNewswire/ - Advanced Polymer Systems, Inc. (APS) (NASDAQ: APOS) announced today that an agreement has been reached with SmithKline Beecham Consumer Products in which APS' Premier Inc. subsidiary will handle sales, marketing, distribution and product development of the ORAFIX(R) denture adhesive brand.
The product development effort, which is being funded by SmithKline Beecham, will focus on improving the ORAFIX product with the Microsponge(R) technology. The agreement also calls for a sales and marketing management fee to be paid to APS.
"In the future we expect that this agreement will evolve into a joint venture built around an improved product and additional line extensions," said an APS spokesperson.
ORAFIX is a long-established multi-million dollar denture adhesive brand. This agreement enables APS to enter a new area of application, the oral cavity, with the Microsponge technology. It is part of an ongoing plan to extend the APS technology into well known consumer franchises on a joint venture basis.
Premier Inc. is a wholly owned subsidiary of APS with full sales, marketing and distribution capability for proprietary drug and toiletry products. Premier has exclusive arrangements to market and distribute two sunscreens, Sundown(R) and Johnson's Baby Sunblock(R), on behalf of Johnson & Johnson Consumer Products and has further licensed Take-Off(R) make-up remover from Johnson & Johnson. Additionally, Premier markets two APS products -- EveryStep(TM), a shoe and foot deodorant, and Exact(TM), one of the fastest growing pimple/acne medication products. Both products contain APS' patented Microsponge controlled-released delivery system.
Advanced Polymer Systems develops, manufactures and sells patented Microsponge delivery systems which allow for the controlled release of active ingredients in a programmed manner in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic and personal care areas. Certain of these projects are conducted under the development and licensing arrangements with large companies, others as part of joint ventures in which APS is a major participant, and a number of projects are exclusive to APS.
