ADVANCED INTERVENTIONAL SYSTEMS RECEIVES TEMPORARY RELIEF FROM INJUNCTION ON ITS LASER SYSTEM FOR TREATING HEART DISEASE PATIENTS

IRVINE, Calif., Dec. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- A federal circuit court in Washington, D.C. granted Advanced Interventional Systems (NASDAQ: LAIS) an emergency stay of an injunction today, which gives the company immediate, temporary relief from a court-ordered injunction issued on Monday, Dec. 21 in a patent infringement lawsuit between LAIS and Pillco Ltd. Partnership.
According to LAIS' Chief Financial Officer, Richard B. Crosby, this emergency stay gives LAIS the right to manufacture, sell and ship its products approved by the federal Food and Drug Administration for commercial marketing until the appeals court rules on LAIS' motion for a stay of the injunction, pending the company's appeal of the district court's decision. This ruling gives Pillco until Jan. 8, 1993, to file any opposition to LAIS' motion for a stay of the injunction.
Advanced Interventional Systems pioneered the procedure for treating heart disease with the excimer laser and is the first and only company, to date, to receive approval from the federal Food and Drug Administration to market a coronary laser system. The company was founded in 1986 and completed its initial offering in November 1991.
